QuickBooks Solopreneur

Nobody becomes a business of one because they wanted accounting software. The team was building features. The audience was trying to get paid and stay out of trouble.

They don't think in features. They think in jobs.

Product principles for QuickBooks Solopreneur

The principles we set at the start, and kept arguing from.

Get paid. Keep business and personal apart. Know what I owe before it’s a problem. That’s the list. Nobody woke up wanting a transaction categorization engine.

Inside the building, teams wanted a feature-driven product, and the case for it rested on research that had aged. Solopreneurs juggle a stack of free tools for a long time before they’ll pay for financial software, and the reasons they finally pay are jobs, not capabilities. Moving the team onto that framing was most of the work, and it happened in shareouts rather than in a doc.

The words came from dozens of interviews, not from us

Business or personal. The hardest question in the product.

The thing that actually torments a business of one is the boundary between business and personal. The same debit card buys printer paper and groceries. Every transaction is a small judgment call, and getting it wrong is the difference between a deduction and an audit.

So we spent dozens of interviews listening for the verbs and the shortcuts people already used, rather than deciding what to call things and hoping it landed. That sounds obvious written down. In practice it means giving up your own vocabulary, including the ones you’re proud of, because a word that tests better than yours is just better.

Once the language matched how people already sorted their own money, the platform could do the sorting for them. Automatic categorization only works if someone trusts the category, and they only trust it if it’s named the way they would have named it. Less manual entry, and more confidence that the books were right.

What it looked like when it worked

Home. Everything a business of one checks before 9am.

Launched February 2024 with 40,000 subscribers, and the generative AI experiences we platformed lifted time spent in app by 12 percent. The subscriber number belongs to a whole launch, with pricing and marketing and the Intuit brand on the box. The 12 percent is the one I’d attribute to the work.
